Your foes will quickly capitalize on mistakes you make in battle here, so caution and careful strategy is a wiser course of action than just rushing headfirst into the fray. ![]() You move your units into position, place them in spots adjacent to enemies, and attack - taking care not to scatter your support too thinly. Battles play out through a system of grid-based combat, similar to what Nintendo fans have seen before in games like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem. And it's important to pay attention to just who you're recruiting, and who you're choosing to send into battle - if you field the wrong team, or if you don't properly balance out the experience points and potential growth for your core group of warriors, it'll mean a quick trip to the game over screen for you. Though you begin with only yourself, a healing priest and a centaur knight, you soon come across an axe-wielding brute. Shining Force II follows the continuing adventures of Bowie and his expanding band of fighters after that initial clash, as you travel around the world in traditional RPG style, gaining levels, upgrading your weapons and armor, and recruiting new combatants to the cause of tracking down and defeating the unleashed evildoers. His teacher tasks him and his friends (fellow warriors in training) to fight and defeat the assailing specters - and so the new Shining Force is born.Ĭhester the Centaur Knight faces off against an attacking Gizmo. And while the franchise continued on beyond this installment and saw several more subsequent sequels, it's hard to deny that Shining Force II is the pinnacle of the brand. A strategy RPG design that hails from SEGA's 16-bit Genesis, the title took the foundation laid down by the already excellent original Shining Force and refined it - polished it to an even more exacting degree of perfection. Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal has consistently been recognized by IGN's Top 100 Games of All Time features throughout the years because, simply, it deserves to be there.
